The Song of Bernadette (1943)

Based on the novel by Franz Werfel, this big-budget drama explores the trials and tribulations of Bernadette Soubirous, who claimed to see a vision of a beautiful lady near her home in Lourdes in 1858 - from her impoverished family to her difficulties at school to the derision her visions bring upon her and, finally, to her affliction with bone-marrow cancer. Under director Henry King, the film is seen through Bernadettešs perspective but at the same time focuses upon the effect that Bernadette has upon her family, her champions, and her detractors.
As the Imperial Prosecutor, Dutour, Vincent Price plays it cold and cynical until his character discovers he has throat cancer, forcing him to turn to accept God. His final speech at the film's end is truly the best of his career..
