Moss Rose (1947)

When her roommate is murdered, showgirl Belle Adair (Peggy Cummins) searches out the mysterious Michael Drego (Victor Mature) who was dating her friend before she died. The amateur sleuth gets herself an invite to dine at the grand estate that Michael shares with his mother, Lady Sterling (Ethel Barrymore) and his new fiancÈe, Audrey (Patricia Medina). When Audrey dies, a Scotland Yard Inspector (Vincent Price) is called into investigate, and soon finds himself protecting Belle when the murderer begins following her trail.

In this Victorian murder mystery, Vinnie does a mean imitation of Sherlock Holmes playing the Scotland Yard inspector and one wonders what he'd do with that role if Basil hadn't already put his own stamp on Conan Doyle's famed sleuth. But it's great to see Price and the imitable Ethel Barrymore on the same screen. A classic gem..
