Master of the Macabre

MASTER OF THE MACABRE

The following is a list of audio recordings in which Vincent plays the horrormeister.

LIGEIA
Date unknown
This would have to be one of my favourites. Price does Poe. It is a superlative rendition and one all fans must have in their collection. Available on LP and on the Edgar Allan Poe collection (MC & CD)

THE EDGAR ALLAN POE COLLECTION
ISBN: 0694524190 -Price: $29.95
Publisher: HarperAudio
A recently released collection, from Haper Collins, of stories and poem read by Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone. Vincent recites (and not with his usual bravado) Ligeia, The Imp of the Perverse, Morella, Berenice and The Gold Bug. Meanwhile, Rathbone (in excellent voice) gets the pick of the litter - some 15 other Poe titles. Available on MC & CD.
Imp of the Perverse and The Gold Bug were originally available on LP and CD (Caedmon 1975, TC1450 & Caedmon 1975, TC1449)

THE GOLD BUG
I have no information on this vinyl release as yet. However, as you will see from the next entry, The Gold Bug has been re-released on CD.

THE GOBLINS AT THE BATH HOUSE & THE CALAMANDER CHEST
LP published by Caedmon in 1978 (TC 1574), re-released in 1978. "Goblins at the Bath House" is an Estonian fairy tale collected by Ruth Manning-Sanders in A Book of Ghosts and Goblins. "The Calamander Chest" is a short story by Joseph Payne Brennan which appeared in Weird Tales January 1954.

TALES OF HORROR
ISBN: 0-06-051187-7
This 6 CD set includes: excerpts from Dracula with David McCallum; Frankenstein with James Mason; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Anthony Quayle; Sleepy Hollow with Ed Begley; Ghost Ship with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr, plus Bernice and The Gold Bug with Vincent Price.

WITCHCRAFT & MAGIC
Capitol Records 1969
The secrets of witchcraft and magic revealed by Vincent Price, distinguished actor and demonologist. With a special electronic score by Douglas Leedy.
Note from Producer Roger Karshner: In this album we have attempted to bring to the listener the essential elements of Witchcraft and Magic, authentically and dramatically. Terry d'Oberoff's script is historically sound and is beautifully written, with satanic, dramatic brillance. Mr Price's interpretation is indeed masterful. His voice surrounds you, lifts your mind and transport it across the landscape of Hell. His articulation chews every word and savors every bite.
According to Lucy Chase Williams, Vincent taped all 122 pages of text at a single sitting, a five hour job. Now that's our Vincent! Available on LP and a re-issued CD.
