Keys of the Kingdom (1944)

This adaptation of AJ Cronin's novel explores the life of missionary Francis Chisholm (Gregory Peck). Chisholm's story is told from his childhood days in Scotland, to his experiences preaching the gospel and helping the poor in China. Along the way, we see the man's tireless devotion to his cause in spite of such obstacles as a civil war and an disagreeable mother superior (Rose Stradner).

Vincent piled on the pounds to play Peck's seminary friend Angus who rises up the ranks of the Catholic Church while Peck remains a lowly missionary. And while not a totally bad character, he does come across as arrogant, racist and pompous.
