This rarely seen videotaped production is now available on MGM's Midnite Movies DVD double-bill with The Tomb of Ligeia. And it showcases Vinnie doing Poe at his best. And I mean best. Forget the campy, over the hill, chewing the scenery performances of his earlier AIP/Corman/Poe adaptations, here is Vincent Unplugged.
In a virtuouso performance, Vincent takes to the stage for four solo acts: The Tell-Tale Heart (chillingly the best); The Sphinx; The Cask of Amontillado; and a faithful attempt at The Pit and the Pendulum.
Too bad the MGM DVD release is such poor quality and doesn't come with a copy of Les Baxter's creepy and excellent score which has appeared on vinyl and CD through Citadel records as a companion piece to Baxter's Cry of the Banshee. Oh! And Mary Grant (Price's second wife, did the cossies - fab).
