Last Man on Earth (1964)

In a post-epidemic world, scientist Robert Morgan (Vincent Price) is the only man immune to a plague which has transformed humanity into vampire-like creatures. Feared by the newly-created vampire society, he successfully cures a young woman, but his triumph is short-lived when the vampires finally turn on him.
Also known as Ultimo Uomo Della Terra, this Italian/American International co-production by director Sidney Salkow features Vincent as Robert Morgan. While many critics passed it over, the movie pre-dates those grim 1970's post-apocolyptic films which made Charlton Heston a star (and, of course, was remade with him in the lead in the brilliant Omega Man). The highlight of this black and white classic is a burning pit, which Robert fills with the vampires he has stalked and staked during the daylight hours. Also, the use of Rome as New York gives the film an other-worldly dimensional quality.
Alive among the lifeless... alone among the crawling creatures of evil that make the night hideous with their inhuman craving!
