Cry of the Banshee (1970)

Ah! Now this is an old favourite of mine. I loved Vinnie as the 16th-century magistrate Lord Edmund Whitman - cursed by the brilliant Elisabeth Bergner - who sees his world disintegrate around him as his family is picked off one-by-one by a unsettlingly sexy Patrick Mower (UK TV's future Callan and Emmerdale star). And he's not the only future famous face. The late Michael Elphick (TV's Boon) and Crying Game director Stephen Rea also make an appearance.

For years I have loved the lush colours, the subtle sexual underplay and the camp performances (those witches always remind me of a bunch of theatre art students or some renegade contemporary dancers lost in the woods). But the 2003 director's cut DVD is the one to have. This includes Terry Gilliam's opening animated credits (superb) and a score by Wilfred Joseph (rather than Lex Baxter's masterpiece which is available on record/cd). The film is also edited in a different way, making Patrick Mower seem like a real being who is cursed to become an instrument of Oona's curse, rather than a banshee who adopts human form to worm his way into the Whitman household.

Although it promises nudity, violence, incest, bestiality (just take a look at the Front of House cards from my personal collection below) the film misses. However I think its still a hoot, with some great moments including Bergner's pronunciation of the name Whit-maaaaan (which even now I have to do her way); Essy Persson going mad at the banquet; her hair turning white in the coffin and, of course, Vinnie's cries of 'Bully boy'....
